I’m glad you’re here.

Please take a look around to get a feel for my educational philosophy, my work, and what I bring to the table as an English teacher.

I cannot remember a time in my life that did not center around children. As a teen, I cared for my younger siblings and the children of many other families. I went to college to become an elementary school teacher, then had four children of my own. For 18 years, I spent most of my time raising a family. During that time, I spent countless hours on field trips, and working in classrooms - as a parent, volunteer, coach, and substitute teacher. I have chaired fundraisers, taught art classes for Kindergarteners, tutored ELA, and been a room parent more times than I can count.

As far as a teaching philosophy, I feel that It is my responsibility to provide every opportunity for my students to learn, and it is up to my students to take advantage of what is provided. While I cannot make a child learn, take interest, or capture his imagination by force - I can work hard to offer a curriculum and classroom culture that is not only conducive to learning, but also lends to the kind of connection and relationships that inspire students to apply themselves. A professor of mine once said, "Students who trust you will work for you." I have found this to be true with my own children, and the students with whom I have interacted over the years. As a parent, my M.O. has always been, "Firm, but warm." I want to be that way with my future students, too.

Part of the trust-building work of teaching includes meeting children where they are, then shepherding them toward growth and achievement. No matter what, students must feel welcome and comfortable before beginning the joyful work of a rigorous ELA curriculum. In my classroom library, students will discover a wide range of perspectives and cultures represented on the shelves. I make a point to include texts from a diverse group of authors in our curriculum. I partner with students to find content that sparks interest and curiosity - what speaks to their hearts and minds. Reading is the single best and most accessible way to explore new cultures, lands, and perspectives. My ultimate goal is to help each child unlock their unique potential for growth through the arts of reading, writing, and speaking.

I believe that the more adults a child has in his or her corner, the more prepared that child will be to meet the future with confidence and competence. My “why” is to be the teacher I needed when I was a young student. Please know that I have been the parent of children who have been truly cared for, inspired, guided, and championed by wonderful educators. I feel truly honored to be able to return the favor.

The world belongs to those who read.
